“Their Righteousness is of Me!”

1115

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.
– Isaiah 54:17

Christ is the all-sufficient Savior of His people! The Prophet Isaiah’s words boasting in the Messiah should wrap a believer in all of heaven’s love and peace!  The very heritage of the servants of the Lord is the assurance that nothing, that’s right nothing- no weapon – no accusing tongue-nothing, shall prosper against them in such a way as to undo the work, the finished work, of Christ the Lord. Hallelujah! Such a thought is too wonderful to comprehend!  Hallelujah forevermore!

The enemy of our souls, that old serpent, certainly accuses God’s people of our daily moral failings, shortcomings, our sins! And, if eternal life is contingent upon our ability to maintain righteousness by the works of the law, we’d be guilty to the very last man of falling short of such a high and holy standard. In fact, every mouth would be shut, nailed shut,  as we sat quietly awaiting the wrath of God to be poured out upon us!

Yet, it isn’t the tongue of God’s people that is condemned! It isn’t the mouth of God’s elect that is shut! Although we are guilty of breaking God’s holy law, sinners by nature, sinners in word, thought, and deed, our accuser is silenced in the courtroom of God’s heaven! Satan and all his agents are told to be silent! Christ Jesus has paid for our sin in full! Our claim to life eternal rests entirely on what our perfect Savior did on our behalf on Calvary’s cross. O beloved of the Lord, “he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

What is more, we are not simply forgiven. To be forgiven does not make us righteous. So Christ not only took our sin but He credited us with His righteousness! The very righteousness of God in Christ is imputed to each and every believer. We are truly “found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith” (Philippians 3:9). A Christian heart is filled with overflowing joy knowing that Christ avails for His own, our righteousness is His righteousness, the very imputed righteousness of Christ, the Almighty.

Beloved of the Lord, trust in your heritage, a heritage bought and paid for by the very blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. You can’t trust in your ability to merely sin less or sin differently. You already know how prone to sin you are – and how prone to sin you will remain!  There’s no hope in seeking a self-righteousness from the law – you’ll find nothing there but sure and swift judgment. Make your boast loudly in Christ, who by his own death fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law, paying all of the conditions in full, giving us a righteousness, a hope, and a future, of His own making! And now, “every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” (Isaiah 55:1).

Our Lord Christ shut the mouth of the accuser! No weapon formed against us shall prosper! Let us rejoice that our righteousness is of Christ! Praise His Name alone!
