The “Town Sinner” had no one in polite society to befriend her. She made her living being used by others as means to an end. Yet in Christ, she found a friend that sticks closer then a Brother. In Christ she found a treasure worth far more than the costly ointment she carried in the alabaster box! A great sinner met the Great Savior-and her life would never be the same.
Do I believe that the Holy Spirit does a progressive work of making us holier more and more each day? No. We are complete in Christ. Do we believe the Holy Spirit testifies of Christ in the preaching of the Word to encourage God’s people to love the brethren and do acceptable works AS those who are sanctified? Absolutely.
When sickness assails our mortal bodies, it could be a sickness unto death. Yet God is faithful to give His people the abiding truth of the matter: God is in control. Worship the Lord in the midst of your storm! Worship the Lord in the swirling tempest of life’s darkest hours. In all things, give thanks!
So how does one know he is saved? He believes the Gospel as revealed in Scripture, putting no confidence in the flesh and trusting only in Christ, his righteous surety who died that he might live eternally, the only true object of saving faith. He has promised to raise believers up on the last day, to never leave them alone, to go and prepare a place for that where He is, His people may be also. All confidence is placed in Christ alone. This is a biblical profession of faith. If a man testifies to this saving Gospel, he is a brother in Christ, having “passed from death unto life.”
To truly know Christ and the power of His resurrection is to walk in the light of life that is Christ Jesus. And so it is that every truly born again Christian “walks in the light as He is in the light,” having fellowship with one another and possessing the wondrous joy that comes from the knowledge that all sins are under the blood of Jesus Christ.
In this dry and desolate place, Philip crossed paths with a man who blindly read the Scripture having no understanding of the Gospel. Yet, by God’s grace, the official’s spiritual eyes were opened to the Christ of whom Isaiah wrote. The Lord of Glory sent living water into the dry and desolate place that was the official’s spiritually dead heart, sending the refreshing Gospel of Christ through the preaching of His servant Philip. The land cried loud hosannas unto the Lord as even the dry ground itself bubbled forth in cool, clear, water!
Redeemed, called personally, eternally kept by the power of God: We are God’s purchased possession, loved of the Lord so much that He sent Christ to fulfill all righteousness for us by His death on the cross. We are exhorted to testify to the truth of the Gospel of God’s free and Sovereign Grace. We have a commission to carry forth as Christians, to share Christ’s finished work in the proclamation of the Gospel. Far and wide, we must spread the Gospel. Let it be our labor of love!
